Education advocates shocking discovery: Letters to the Editor Nov. 4, 2026

The Issue: Education advocate Adriana Aviles’ anger at her son getting high grades but not learning basic math.Adriana Aviles isn’t wrong in her complaint that New York City schools are a farce (“NY Schools’ Grade-A failure,” Nov.1).But it should’ve come as no surprise to this “fierce education advocate” that her own son was struggling.

How had she never noticed before? She’d regarded the boy’s stellar grades and lack of negative feedback from his teachers as justification for ignoring his academic performance herself.Does Aviles realize that her well-deserved tirade against the school system is as much a call for parental involvement as it is for educational reform?Jeffrey WilsonArdsleyAs a retired educator, I was heartbroken to read Aviles’ story. There will never be improvements to our education system as long as Randi Weingarten is in charge of the all-powerful American Federation of Teachers.Money per student keeps increasing, but learning is decreasing.Alice DalyMahopacI find Aviles’ story to be bizarre and unlikely. She never once realized that New York City schools, which get negative press throughout the year, weren’t authentically educating her son, or that their attempts to do so were lacking in quality? As a former professor there, I had students who couldn’t read and write at a collegiate, or even high school, level. If grade inflation continues at this rate, I feel sorry for my former colleagues at the CUNY.James JohnsonBrooklynWhile I do not endorse the New York public school system, my question lies with Aviles, not the teachers.Where was she when her son was doing homework? The blame lies on her for very poor oversight of her child.M.
