Israeli commando killed in Lebanon after soldiers ambushed by Hezbollah

A 22-year-old Israeli commando has been killed fighting Hezbollah terrorists in Lebanon, Israel’s military said Wednesday.Capt.Eitan Itzhak Oster, of Israel’s elite Egoz Commando Unit, died in combat in an undisclosed village in southern Lebanon, the Times of Israel reported.

His death marks the first official fatality among Israeli troops since the Jewish state launched its ground invasion this week. The Times of London reported that an unconfirmed number of Israeli troops had been killed Wednesday after being ambushed close to Hezbollah tunnels near the southern Lebanese village of Odaisseh.

It wasn’t clear if Oster was among those casualties. The military didn’t offer up any other details on his death. One survivor of the ambush told the outlet that everyone in his unit had been injured in the attack — but they had managed to withdraw. The developments came just hours after Hezbollah said its fighters were battling Israeli forces in the border town of Maroun el-Ras — marking the first ground clashes since Israel began pushing into its northern neighbor to hammer the Iran-backed terror group. The group said it had also fired rockets at military posts inside Israel. The group’s media chief Mohammad Afif said those battles were only “the first round” and that the group had enough fighters, weapons and ammunition to push back Israel. The Israeli military confirmed it was bolstering its presence by calling up regular infantry and armored units to join its ground operations in Lebanon — a day after Iran attacked Israel with a barrage of ballistic missiles.
