72-year-old Texas woman hospitalized with broken pelvis, internal bleeding after violent geese attack
A 72-year-old woman was hospitalized at a major trauma center after a vicious flock of geese knocked her to the ground and repeatedly pecked her at a Texas park, causing internal bleeding, according to a report.Lydia West was feeding ducks at a pond inside City Lake Park in Royse City — part of her “normal routine” — when several geese began attacking her, her son, David West, told WFAA.“Apparently, some large geese came up to her and started attacking the food,” he told the outlet.“She fell hard to the ground, tried to get up and flee, and the geese actually chased her down.She was trapped on the ground, unable to move,” he added.The “small-statured” woman was eventually found by a couple in the park who were able to pry the ferocious fowl off her, he recalled.“They were able to get the geese off of her, and they called the paramedics,” David West said.Lydia West was taken to a local hospital and transferred to a Dallas trauma center after doctors recognized how extensive her injuries were.
She broke her pelvis and had internal bleeding, according to her son.“Several breaks on one side of her pelvis,” he said of her injuries.
“She also had internal bleeding.”“She has a long road of physical therapy and learning how to be able to walk,” the younger West added, noting his mother already had some preexisting health concerns.The 72-year-old was shocked that the geese could become so aggressive.“For her, it was a shock that the geese could even become that territorial and could hurt somebody,” David West added.Domesticated Chinese goose breeds, which have been spotted at the park, are known to be particularly vocal, on high alert, and can occasionally become aggressive “watch-geese” if they feel threatened or territorial, WFAA reported.“It just sounded so out there,” West said of the call he first received about the attack.
