Brown University probe progressing extremely fast after cops bust person of interest at hotel

The investigation into the deadly shooting at Brown University is “progressing extremely fast,” cops revealed Sunday — after they detained a person of interest at a local hotel.Police stormed a Coventry, RI, hotel around 3:45 a.m.to take the individual, only described as in his 20s, into custody after an 11-hour manhunt.“It’s all hands on deck,” Providence Police Chief Col.

Oscar Perez Jr.told reporters of the ongoing investigation.“I think the fact that we work closely with the federal partners and different municipalities, the men and women of the Providence Police Department, the detectives, outstanding work,” he said.“And I think that’s why we have been able to move forward as we have and progress in such a fast manner.”No charges have been filed yet against the person in custody, Perez said.Officials offered few updates on the case during the early-afternoon news conference.

Perez only describing the case as “complex.” Providence Mayor Brett Smiley stressed that despite the lack of updates, police have “not hit any road blocks.”  The names of the victims, including nine who were injured, have not been made public because not all of their families have been notified about what happened, police said.Smiley noted that he met with one of the injured students in the hospital Sunday, with the victim revealing a heartbreaking detail after the violence that engulfed the campus over the weekend. “One of the students that showed tremendous courage literally said to me, ‘You know, that active shooter drill they made me do in high school actually helped me in the moment,’ which, at the same time, provided me hope and was so sad,” Smiley told reporters.The shooter was armed with a handgun and fired more than 40 .9mm rounds when he stormed a classroom during a review for an economics exam, law-enforcement officials told the Associated Press. The weapon had unique characteristics that helped cops tie him to the deadly shooting, acc...
