Don Mattingly joining Phillies as bench coach to continue search for elusive World Series

The next stop in the coaching career of Yankees legend Don Mattingly — and in his search for an elusive World Series title — will take him to Philadelphia.After a run to this year’s Fall Classic with the Blue Jays as their bench coach ended in heartbreak, Mattingly will join the Phillies and serve in the same position, the team announced.Philadelphia, where his son Preston is currently general manager, had initially reached out to Mattingly back in November, The Post’s Jon Heyman reported at the time, and two months later, the 64-year-old — and former manager with the Marlins and Dodgers — will officially join the staff of Rob Thomson and a Phillies team trying to get back to the World Series for the first time since 2022.Even as a former player for an organization with 27 titles, Mattingly has never collected a World Series ring, though he came close with Toronto after their playoff run fell short with a crushing Game 7 loss to the Dodgers in extras.Mattingly said in November that he knew 2025 would likely be his last season with Toronto and cited the “balancing act of family and still being a part of the game” as a layer to his decision of whether to take another coaching position in the future.His tenure as the Blue Jays’ bench coach lasted three seasons, with his stints in Miami and Los Angeles occurring from 2016-22 and 2011-15, respectively.Before the managerial stints, though, Mattingly’s coaching career began with the Yankees with a three-year run as hitting coach and a fourth year as bench coach — remaining with the organization where he spent his entire 14-year career and emerged as a franchise icon.The first baseman made six All-Star Games, won nine Gold Gloves and secured the 1985 American League MVP award while hitting .307 with an .830 OPS across his career, but Mattingly was recently denied a bid for the Hall of Fame for the 19th time.“If it doesn’t happen, it’s not going to change who I am, what I think about things,” Ma...
