Several backcountry skiers are missing following an avalanche in northern California on Tuesday, authorities said.Search crews responded to a report of an avalanche that occurred midday Tuesday in the Castle Peak area in the Sierra Nevada, according to the Nevada County Sheriff's Office."It has been reported that a group of back country skiers was involved in the incident, with several members of the party missing at this time," the sheriff's office said.Man dies after being caught in avalanche while snowmobilingThe search and rescue operation is underway for up to 10 people possibly involved in the avalanche, according to Brandon Schwartz, director of the Sierra Avalanche Center, which forecasts avalanche conditions in the area around Lake Tahoe.Rescuers are facing very difficult conditions, including avalanche danger themselves, with 2 to 3 feet of new snow in the last 36 hours in the area and more still falling at 2 to 4 inches per hour, Schwartz told ABC News. The Sierra Avalanche Center said there was "high" avalanche danger in the backcountry on Tuesday."Rapidly accumulating snowfall, weak layers in the existing snowpack, and gale-force winds that blow and drift snow have created dangerous avalanche conditions in the mountains," the center said."Natural avalanches are likely, and human-triggered avalanches large enough to bury or injure people are very likely."Snow falls, Feb.
