Off-duty NYPD cop shoots man in the head after tracking his wifes stolen car: sources

An off-duty NYPD cop shot and gravely wounded a man suspected of stealing his wife’s car in the Bronx late Monday, law enforcement sources said. The cop — who is assigned to the Public Security Section under the department’s Intelligence Bureau and is often stationed at Gracie Mansion — opened fire around 9:10 p.m.on West 231st Street near Albany Crescent in Kingsbridge, hitting the 30-year-old victim in the head, the sources said. The ailing man went by private means to NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition, according to police.The violence erupted when the cop tracked the previously stolen vehicle and found the 30-year-old man and another person believed to be involved in the heist, sources said.The officer had not been arrested by Tuesday afternoon, and it remained unclear what – if any – charges he would face. He was placed on modified duty, sources said.
