Luigi Mangiones Family: All About His Parents, Cousin & Other Relatives

Luigi Mangione, the suspect charged in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has remained at the center of a closely watched legal case since Thompson was fatally shot outside a Manhattan hotel in December 2024.Mangione was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania, five days after the shooting, after a McDonald’s employee reportedly recognized him from surveillance images released by authorities and alerted police.
At the time of his arrest, investigators said Mangione was allegedly carrying a firearm, fake identification documents and other items they believed connected him to the shooting.“This is a strong person of interest,” former New York City Mayor Eric Adams said during a 2024 press conference.
“He matches the description of the identification we’ve been looking for. He’s also in possession of several items that we believe will connect him to this incident.” Mangione later pleaded not guilty to both state and federal charges tied to Thompson’s death.
In January 2026, a federal judge dismissed the murder and weapons charges that could have made Mangione eligible for the death penalty, though he still faces multiple serious charges in both cases. Then, in May 2026, a New York judge ruled that some evidence recovered from Mangione’s backpack during his arrest could not be used at trial because the initial search was unlawful.
However, prosecutors will still be allowed to introduce other key evidence, including a gun, silencer and notebook recovered during a later police station search. His state trial is currently scheduled to begin on September 8, 2026.
