Sultan of Sultan + Shepard Opens Up About Rare Lung Condition Affecting His Performances

For the first time, Sultan + Shepard‘s Ossama Al Sarraf is speaking openly with fans about his health.In an Instagram post this week, the Grammy-nominated producer revealed that he was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis several years ago.

The condition now requires him to use supplemental oxygen during high-energy activities, including during live performances.“A few years ago, I was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis, a condition that causes scarring in the lungs and prevents them from fully expanding, leading to shortness of breath,” Al Sarraf wrote.

“Mostly my everyday life is the same, but I now need to use supplemental oxygen during high-energy activities like working out or performing, and sometimes in cities at higher altitudes.” The post, which arrived alongside a photo of the DJ wearing a nasal cannula, described a long period of denial following the initial diagnosis.He said he spent years hoping the condition might resolve on its own.

“For a long time, I was in denial about my condition, hoping I’d miraculously wake up one day and be completely fine,” he wrote.“At the same time, conversations around disability and health can feel emotionally exhausting and difficult to navigate.

But lately, I’ve realized how important it is for me to be open about it, not only for myself, but hopefully to encourage others dealing with health issues to feel less alone and less afraid to talk about what they’re going through too.” He and his co-producer Ned Shepard have remained active as Sultan + Shepard, most recently teaming up with Shallou on a single ‘Twilight,’ in early-May.The beloved dance music duo, a longtime favorite of Lane 8’s This Never Happened label, has tour dates ahead and Al Sarraf made clear he intends to keep that pace.
