The price of calling Cali home comes with more than $80,000 in combined annual demands for couples that are starting families, owing to extreme childcare, maternity healthcare, housing and groceries fees, according to a trending 2026 study via Kendamil, a baby formula brand. Researchers analyzed the financial burden of each of the four parenting necessities across the country to identify the cheapest and most expensive states for childrearing. The investigators crowned Washington, D.C. as the nation’s No.1 high-ticket hotspot, with mothers and fathers forking over, on average, a staggering $90,046 per year to properly provide for their pups.
Massachusetts and California secured the second and third-place positions on the podium, echoing recent data. Arkansas, however, earned top billing as the most affordable state for moms and dads with annual costs totaling a mere $36,386 — $53,660 less than the amount imposed upon parents in flashier zip codes. West Virginia trails closely behind Arkansa, boasting a cool $37,328 in yearly dues, while Mississippi rises as No.3 with $37,383.
