SoCal region named the most unaffordable housing market in US California home to 6 of the most expensive regions

There’s no place like home.That is, if you can afford one.Los Angeles and Orange counties form the most unaffordable major housing market in America, while California claimed six of the eight worst spots nationwide, according to a grim new analysis.Southern California News Group columnist Jonathan Lasner crunched recent Zillow data from 50 major markets, grading each on families sharing homes, the availability of affordable listings and the portion of income consumed by rent.LA-Orange County landed dead last overall.

That was the smallest share of any market analyzed.Renters were also squeezed, with rent eating up 34% of local income — the third-highest burden in the country.San Diego ranked second worst, with 9.5% of families doubling up, only 10% of listings deemed affordable and 31% of income going toward rent.The Golden State’s housing misery stretched far beyond Southern California.San Jose ranked fourth, followed by San Francisco at No.5.

The Inland Empire tied New York for sixth, while Sacramento landed in eighth place.Boston, at No.3, and New York were the only non-California markets among the eight least affordable.Across the six California metros, just 14% of listings were considered affordable, compared with 35% nationwide.
