Florida boater guilty of killing new drinking buddy during marina brawl, dumping body into water
A drunk Florida boater killed a man and dumped his body in a marina’s water during a violent shoving match that broke out aboard his sailboat, where the two had been drinking together on Memorial Day in 2024.Kamal Padlowski was found guilty Thursday of murdering Melvin Jimenez during a brawl at the Little Harbor Marina in Ruskin, FL, on May 25, 2024, according to the Hillsborough County State Attorney’s Office.Padlowski, 52, shoved Jimenez during the fight, which caused the 47-year-old victim to fall backwards and slam his head onto the dock, leaving him motionless on the fiberglass gangway, officials said.Padlowski then grabbed Jimenez’s ankles and dumped him into the awaiting water instead of rendering aid or calling for help.
“I didn’t know he was unconscious.I didn’t know that he had even fallen,” Padlowski said in court.
“I knew he was still a threat to me, and I just wanted to get distance between us.”Jimenez suffered vertebral fractures in the fall, which severed both vertebral arteries, physician and pathologist Edward Willey testified in court.Willey claimed Jimenez would have died regardless of whether he was thrown into the water.Jimenez died from drowning, the state attorney’s office ruled.
Padlowski was found guilty by a jury of first-degree murder.The two men had only met each other hours earlier at the nearby tiki-themed Sunset Bar and Grill, where they were both celebrating major milestones.Jimenez had won a contract to install security cameras with Walmart while Padlowski was engaged the day prior, the Tampa Bay Times reported.As the two celebrated, Padlowski playfully commented on Jimenez ordering a vodka, saying the drink was Russian and they call it “water,” he recalled in court.They soon left the bar and made the 10-minute walk to the marina, where they drank aboard the docked sailboat for approximately 40 minutes with Padlowski’s fiancée, where they engaged in friendly conversation, according to the outlet.
