EDM Was America's Fastest-Growing Genre in the First Half of 2026: Report

Electronic dance music gained more of the American listening market in the first half of 2026 than any other genre, according to the ‘2026 Midyear Report: Trends in Music, Television & Film’ from Luminate, the data company that supplies the numbers behind the Billboard charts.Ad 0:00 Click for sound 0:00 / 0:00 The gain amounted to 0.51 percentage points of on-demand audio share, a modest-sounding figure that no other genre matched.

Luminate attributed the growth to two very different forces.One is the genre’s current class of hitmakers led by the likes ofJohn Summit and Disco Lines.

The other is nostalgia, in the form of a viral social media trend that has sent listeners back to songs released between 2015 and 2017.The example the report singles out is ‘Closer,’ the collaboration from The Chainsmokers and Halsey that turns 10 this month.

That second force complicates the story.Dance music made its gains in a market already tilted toward older music, one in which roughly two-thirds of audio streams come from tracks more than 18 months old.

On the music Luminate classifies as current, World Music leads.In terms of the total music market, US on-demand audio streams rose 4.8% to 733 billion while global streams grew 9.8% to 2.8 trillion.

R&B and hip-hop still take roughly one in four US streams, though Luminate says the category is ceding ground to other genres, including dance music.You can find the full report from Luminate here....
