Coyote vs. Acme review: This finished Looney Tunes movie was shelved by Warner Bros. Is it any good?

Acme,” a cracking comedy that’s easily among the top “Looney Tunes” movies ever, was almost never seen by anybody.Three years ago, the $70 million live-action/animation hybrid along the lines of “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” was part of a trio of completed projects that were unceremoniously shelved and taken as a tax write-off by new Warner Bros.Discovery CEO David Zaslav.The other victims of Zaslav’s merciless shears were “Batgirl” and “Scoob! Holiday Haunt.” They’re still gathering dust somewhere.And, look, that was probably the financially responsible thing to do.

It’s hard to imagine a Bugs Bunny movie that’s not co-starring Michael Jordan or LeBron James grossing a break-even $140 million at the box office.Who cares, Doc? We’re talking about Daffy Duck, Tweety and Elmer Fudd here — not the sobering reality of balance sheets.“Coyote vs.Acme,” which was happily bought from WB by distributor Ketchup Entertainment, is the dream scenario of what I wish every studio would do with their IP — play around, don’t focus-group it into generically inoffensive oblivion and retain the essential soul of our favorite characters.That’s what’s so lovable and laudable about this left-field charmer: Director Dave Green and screenwriter Samy Burch passionately grasp just how hilarious the Looney Tunes can still be nearly a century after they debuted.The premise here is demented — and brilliant.Wile E.
