WNBA legend, Sparks superstar Nneka Ogwumike announces retirement in stunning reveal

Nneka Ogwumike is walking away from the WNBA while she remains one of its best players.The Los Angeles Sparks superstar announced Wednesday that she will retire at the conclusion of the 2026 season, ending an extraordinary 15-year career that included a championship, an MVP award and nearly a decade leading the players’ union.Ogwumike revealed her decision during an interview with Taylor Rooks on Wednesday’s Boardroom Talks.“I feel very fulfilled … and I am proud to say that I’m retiring from the WNBA,” Ogwumike said.The timing makes the announcement particularly surprising.At 36, Ogwumike is averaging 16.9 points and 8.7 rebounds while shooting approximately 51 percent from the field this season.
She is not being forced out by declining production or a disappearing role.Instead, Ogwumike said she reached the decision while walking along a beach in San Diego during training camp.After navigating free agency and an exhausting collective bargaining negotiation, she realized she felt satisfied with what she had accomplished.Ogwumike leaves behind one of the most decorated careers in league history.The Sparks selected her with the No.
1 overall pick in the 2012 draft, and she immediately won Rookie of the Year.Her defining season came four years later, when she captured the 2016 MVP award and helped Los Angeles win its first championship since 2002.Ogwumike accumulated 11 All-Star selections, eight All-WNBA honors and seven All-Defensive selections.
She was also named to the WNBA’s 25th Anniversary Team.She has scored 7,879 points, fourth-most in league history, and collected 3,565 rebounds, third-most all time.Ogwumike spent her first 12 seasons with Los Angeles before joining Seattle in 2024.The Liberty also pursued her, but she chose the Storm over New York.
