Remains of tragic 9/11 victim finally IDd thanks to breakthrough forensics method

The remains of another tragic 9/11 victim have been identified thanks to a groundbreaking forensic approach, bringing closure to her grieving relatives after nearly 25 years, city officials said Monday. Officials said the woman, whose name was withheld at the request of her family, is the 1,654 victim to have their remains identified since the horrific terrorist attack.“A quarter century after the day that forever changed our world, we are keeping the promise to identify those who died at the World Trade Center in 2001 and return them to their loved ones,” said Chief Medical Examiner Dr.Jason Graham in a press release.The woman was ID’d through a crucial new method called “forensic investigative genetic genealogy,” or FIGG, officials said. The technique combines DNA technology and genealogical investigation and involves the city’s Office of the Medical Examiner collaborating with the NYPD’s Investigate Genetic Genealogy Squad. Officials said the approach has allowed researchers to also identify the recently discovered remains of three victims, providing additional closure for their families. The ME’s office said identifying the remains of victim is a “sacred commitment.”Officials called the FIGG system a “promising addition” to their toolkit in identifying the remains of nearly 1,100 victims of the attack.“We will continue to work until every possible answer is found and every family that has been waiting can have the clarity and closure they deserve,” Mayor Zohram Mamdani said in a statement....
