Female Fla. high school teacher gets prison for sick sex romps with teen student on campus

A Florida high school teacher who had sex with a 17-year-old student on campus was sentenced to seven years in prison and 15 years of probation on Thursday.Heather Mashburn-Smith, 37, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to unlawful activity with a minor following her arrest in April, when authorities alleged she had sexual relations with the student on Port Charlotte High School’s campus twice that month, according to ABC7.“What this woman has done is not just unlawful, it is damaging to the students and staff around her,” Sheriff Bill Prummell said of the educator, who was suspended from her job at the high school.“This individual took advantage of that vulnerability and preyed on one of the people she was entrusted to protect,” the statement continued.The age of consent in Florida is 18.After her arrest on April 29, Mashburn-Smith gave a “full, post-Miranda confession” to authorities and was charged with unlawful activity with minors, enhanced to a first-degree felony because she’s a teacher, according to the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office.
