Dolphins trade former Texas star QB Quinn Ewers to Jaguars

Quinn Ewers will be taking a quick trip up I-95 this season.The former Texas signal-caller was traded by the Dolphins to the Jaguars, the teams announced Saturday.Miami received a 2028 sixth-round pick in the exchange.Ewers played in four games last season — starting three — as a rookie for Miami.He racked up 622 passing yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions.Originally a third-string quarterback, Ewers saw his first NFL action in a Week 7 blowout loss to the Browns.

He was named the starter in Week 16 after Tua Tagovailoa was benched and remained as such for the rest of the season.The Dolphins were 1-2 in games he started.In his lone win — Week 17 against the Buccaneers — Ewers completed 14-of-22 passes for 172 yards to go along with two touchdowns.Ewers was a three-year starter at Texas, where he led the Longhorns to back-to-back CFP semifinals in 2023-24 as an All-Conference selection.

As a junior in 2024, Ewers led the SEC with 31 touchdowns on 65.8 percent completion while splitting playing time with Arch Manning.After a strong spring, Ewers fell apart in the preseason, going 1-for-8 in the sole game he played.He attributed the poor performance to a groin injury, but the Dolphins are going in another direction Malik Willis’ backup.Jacksonville’s backup situation gets more interesting with the addition of Ewers a day before roster cuts.

If they release current backup Nick Mullens, the Jaguars will save $1.2 million while being hit with $1.3 million in dead cap space.Mullens, 31, played in parts of five games in 2025 while backing up Trevor Lawrence....
