A modest Southern California tract house that was built in 1960 and sold during that decade for under $11,000 has hit the market for the first time in six decades — now listed at $4.25 million, representing a nearly 43,000% price increase.Long before coastal San Diego real estate became a seven-figure game, artists Wayne and Barbara Chapman purchased their home in Solana Beach for the princely sum of $10,900.But the Chapmans didn’t simply own the house: They transformed it into a highly personal, living, breathing work of organic architecture.After marrying in 1969, the couple hired visionary San Diego organic architect Kendrick Bangs Kellogg to completely reimagine the house, turning it into what can only be described as a tropical retreat filled with magic and whimsy.

The Chapmans purchased the property simply as an affordable home.They then had Kellogg completely reinvent it during the 1970s.

The couple didn’t just hand over the keys — they got their hands dirty and helped build it.In an interview with San Diego Magazine in 2025, Wayne Chapman told the outlet, “We dreamed of having a house like this where we could work at our crafts.
