A 17-year-old suspect has been charged with one count of murder and six counts of attempted murder in connection with a deadly shooting at an unsanctioned Bay Area rave in July.The suspected gunman was arrested on August 27, more than a month after the incident, according to a press release issued by the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office.
The shooting happened on July 25 during a pop-up rave in Morgan Hill, which was largely promoted on social media and drew hundreds to a rural property along Hale Avenue.The party was tied to a Twitch streamer known as NateDeBaiits, who was celebrating his birthday when the violence occurred.
Deputies were dispatched to the scene around 10:15pm after reports of intoxicated attendees and someone throwing bottles at passing vehicles.Police reportedly arrived to find partygoers fleeing after gunshots had already been fired.
18-year-old Desiderio “Desi” Romero V was pronounced dead at the scene, while six surviving victims were transported to local hospitals.Community members had submitted tips, photos and video through an FBI digital tip line in the weeks following the shooting, information investigators credited with helping identify the suspect.
The teenager was ultimately taken into custody without incident after deputies with the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office executed a “high-risk” search warrant at a residence in Salinas, where they recovered multiple weapons and ammunition.“We’re deeply grateful to the community members who stepped forward and shared what they knew,” Sheriff Robert Jonsen said in a statement.
