“It should not be that they have to actually commit a crime and be sentenced before immigration proceedings can commence.”Essayli’s office runs a program called “Operation Guardian Angel” that works around the law by targeting repeat immigration offenders who are subsequently picked up by cops for removal.The operation, which kicked off in May 2025, has generated 769 arrest warrants and seen the transfer of 362 defendants to ICE custody by August.But it’s limited to Los Angeles and six other counties, and only works in certain cases.Meanwhile, the state is hit with dozens of instances each week where illegal migrants who have prior convictions or are known to have committed crimes are busted again on new charges.California Republican gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton said that enough is enough.
