When Noisia announced in 2019 that the group would disband, fans treated it like the end of an era.The band comprising Nik Roos, Martijn van Sonderen and Thijs de Vlieger had spent two decades reshaping the sound of electronic music, and the news that they were calling it quits landed hard in a scene they had helped define.
A new documentary, Vlucht, revisits that period.Rather than dwelling on the mechanics of a breakup, the film follows the band and their longtime manager, Walter, as they begin a farewell tour in 2020 and start to imagine what comes after Noisia.
Along the way, it settles into an unlikely through-line: birdwatching, a shared pastime that becomes a kind of parallel narrative to the group’s own migration toward separate lives.The film’s title translates roughly to “flight,” a word that works on two levels.
It nods to the birds the three men track through binoculars between tour stops and it gestures at their own departure from a project that consumed most of their adult lives.Back in September 2019, Noisia confirmed plans to split at the end of the following year due to creative differences, dealing a death knell to a prolific career in which they served as pioneers of the drum & bass and breakbeat genres.
They released their third and final album, Closer, in May 2022 and planned a farewell tour that was splintered by the pandemic before culminating in their final live performance on August 21, 2022 at Lowlands Festival in Biddinghuizen, Netherlands.Vlucht is directed by Farhad Khodadadzade.
