Peppa Pig creators $13.4M home burgled by gang behind one of worlds biggest art heists

A Romanian crime gang raided the $13.4 million UK home of the creator of beloved children’s TV show “Peppa Pig,” stealing loot worth $87,500 – more than a decade after carrying out one of the world’s largest art heists.Radu Dogaru, 41, and Adrian Alempi, 34, broke into English animator Mark Baker’s leafy south-west England home via a first-floor window on Valentine’s Day while he and his wife went out for just 90 minutes, it was revealed during their sentencing on Tuesday.“The value of the stolen items was [$87,500] and included jewellery, a Rolex watch, Chanel and other designer handbags and suitcases,” prosecutor Joanne Cecil told the hearing, according to the Sun.The pair had previously served prison time for a 2012 heist at a Dutch gallery where they swiped artworks by Picasso, Matisse and Monet.Alempi then illegally entered the UK just a day before the raid on the cartoon creator’s 12,500-square-foot home.Both burglars were spotted at a subway station around two hours before their latest raid, then back there again after it, where they were with items they had grabbed, including a Louis Vuitton suitcase.Dogaru and Alempi were put under surveillance – but that didn’t stop them from targeting another large London home three days later. The pair were nabbed while boarding a bus trying to flee the area, having already stuffed their bags with valuables.A search warrant led to some of Baker’s stolen possessions being found at Dogaru’s property, prosecutors said, without disclosing exactly what was recovered.The pair had previously been convicted for the October 2012 heist at Rotterdam’s Kunsthal gallery.Among the works stolen were Picasso’s “Tête d’Arlequin,” Matisse’s “La Liseuse en Blanc et Jaune,” and Monet’s “Waterloo Bridge, London,” which were insured for an estimated $24.4 million.Dogaru was released from prison in either 2017 or 2018 despite being sentenced to six years behind bars in February 2014, while Al...
