Pete Alonso offers awkward Yankees mention while thanking Mets fans for support

“I am beyond thankful for all the support and it was really fun to play,” Alonso said after homering in the Orioles’ 7-1 win over the Mets on Wednesday at Citi Field to complete a three-game sweep.“I feel like New York will always be a place where it feels like homecoming – it doesn’t matter whether it’s here or at Yankee Stadium.The whole city of New York is meaningful to us.”It’s certainly understandable that Alonso would feel the love at Citi Field from Mets fans since it would appear most team supporters wish the team did not leave him leave.There isn’t that history with the Yankees, though, and he’s performed quite well against them in his career.Alonso, spanning his seven seasons with the Mets and this first with the AL East rival Orioles, owns a career .253/.333/.558 slash line with 14 homers and 35 RBIs in his career against the Bronx Bombers.At Yankee Stadium, Alonso has hit .247/.312/.600 with nine homers and 21 RBIs in 23 games.Alonso went 5-for-14 with two solo homers in the Yankees’ four-game sweep in The Bronx from May 1-4 this year.With just 42 games against the Yankees under his belt, the first baseman is statistically averaging a homer in every three-game set and five RBIs every six games.When he and the Orioles visit Yankee Stadium for a season-ending series next weekend, it’s possible it could matter for both teams.The Yankees are not likely to win the AL East but they could be in the race still dependent on how next week’s four-game set with the Rays plays out in The Bron...
