James Hype Teases 16-Deck DJ Format: "Maybe We've Been Thinking Too Small"

James Hype has teased an ambitious DJ format, which appears to be built around 16 decks and a 360° configuration.“Maybe we’ve been thinking too small,” said the chart-topping producer, who is widely regarded as one of the most technically skilled DJs in the dance music scene.
No one can actively mix 16 tracks at once with two hands, so the decks would probably work like sections of an orchestra.A handful would likely carry full tracks while Hype uses the rest to load loops, samples and vocal acapellas ready to drop in, sort of like streams connecting to a river.
The craft would lie in deciding, on the fly, which of those 16 signals actually hits the speakers.Hype refrained from announcing specific details about the format, like whether it’s a one-off stage build or something he plans to take on tour.
He is, however, excited about the viability of the concept.“This might be the best idea I’ve ever had,” Hype added.
“Or the most unnecessary.” The format is apropos of Hype, a showman perpetually searching for a stage setup complex enough to finally test his limits.“There have been a few periods in my life where I’ve achieved the thing I always wanted,” Hype told us in an interview last summer.
“I got there and I realized I was already over it.I wanted the next thing.” Scroll to continue more from edm Nevada Is the Only State Where EDM Was the Most-Searched Music Genre, Study Finds You can watch Hype’s teaser below.
