Mamdani pitches Trump on major NYC project and admits housing development has significant way to go

Mayor Zohran Mamdani tried again to pitch his texting buddy President Trump on an affordable housing project in Queens during a chummy summit between the political odd couple at Grace Mansion on Monday.But the fresh-faced socialist left the meeting without closing the deal to lock up federal funding for the the pie-in-the-sky Sunnyside Yards redevelopment.The project, which was stalled for decades before it was revived by Mamdani earlier this year, was a main topic of conversation between the two as they continued their budding bro-mance.“It’s always been a great location,” Trump said, addressing reporters after the sitdown.“I owned a building in Sunnyside.

It was a great building I know very well.So when they mentioned Sunnyside Yard, they’ve been talking about developing that for 50 years.“So maybe they have a shot at doing it,” he added, marking the first time Trump has addressed the plan after Mamdani pitched him on the project earlier this year.Hizzoner said there is still a lot of federal red tape to cut through to get the housing plan off the ground, as well as financing hurdles, which would require the White House’s help.“We’ve spoken about Sunnyside Yard,” he said.
