Scottie Scheffler calls out very much untrue narrative surrounding Americans at team golf events

Scottie Scheffler revealed the one thing that has frustrated him and his American teammates regarding team events, and it has nothing to do with the event itself. Scheffler, 30, is at Medinah Country Club in Illinois this week for the Presidents Cup, where he explained how narratives that have come out of the other team golf event — the Ryder Cup — have left him annoyed. “I think that’s something that’s probably been frustrating for us as American players, is some of the narrative that have gone on over the course of my team match play career,” the No.1 ranked golfer in the world told reporters on Tuesday.

“Stuff like Patrick Cantlay not wearing his hat or stupid rumors that simply aren’t true, like meeting in a different team room and the Americans aren’t a close team.It’s something for us that can be very frustrating at times because it’s very much untrue.“Like when I think about that kind of stuff, like I’ve always been at my best when I’m kind of out of the fray.”Scheffler was referencing the controversy surrounding Cantlay’s headwear, or lack thereof, during the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome, after a Sky Sports report suggested he did not wear a Team USA hat during the tournament out of protest over American players not being compensated.

The report also indicated it fractured the locker room. The topic was still very much in people’s minds in 2025 on Long Island when Cantlay addressed it in the lead-up to the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black. “Like I’ve said a million times, the hat didn’t fit last [Ryder Cup], and this year we worked with them to make sure we had one, and we got one, so we’re good,” Cantlay said.However, the Americans did little to quash the narratives last year during the first two days as the Europeans dominated them on U.S.soil and held on for the win on the third day....
