Effin's Next Album Samples Obscure 50's Love Songs and Underground Mole People

Call it crate-digging with a broken heart: Effin has revealed a new album, Heartbeats, turning decades of sampled ephemera into a single sprawling love story.Due out November 8, the album features 12 tracks that comprise the prolific producer’s “most focused and ambitious conceptual project to date,” per a press release.

Where his earlier records Cheap Thrills and Daydreams flirted with vintage textures and world-building, Heartbeats commits fully through the lens of romance.“My songs and albums are very thematic in nature,” Effin said.

“Daydreams was me proving to myself I could write a concept album – and Heartbeats was me going all in on a theme: love.” The Nashville-based beatsmith dug through old films, dusty video games, forgotten live performances and obscure YouTube videos discovered during those sleepless internet rabbit holes we’re all guilty of plunging down.He also studied Motown soul classics, 90s NYC hip-hop, Bon Iver’s palpitating folktronica, vintage American advertising à la Mad Men and even a 1950s film about subterranean mole people.

Heartbeats closes with a nod to Nashville’s own Anita Kerr Singers, whose crystalline voice haunted so many recording sessions in the late 1950s and early 1960s that her harmonies essentially became part of the city’s musical wallpaper.For an artist building his name on sampling the past, the future is ironically bright.
