The Chainsmokers were rushed off the stage Friday night at Vanderbilt University’s ‘Lights on the Lawn’ concert after it partially gave way, forcing the duo to improvise and deliver their DJ set at the venue’s front-of-house area.The show is an annual student-run event that raises money for the Mary Parrish Center, a nonprofit serving survivors of domestic violence, and it draws thousands of students each fall to the university’s alumni lawn.
This year’s crowd was estimated at 7,000.When the stage began to buckle during the The Chainsmokers’ first song, the concert’s organizers scrambled to find a solution.
Rather than end the night, Alex Pall and Drew Taggart relocated their equipment to the opposite end of the lawn.The improvisation kept the concert alive, but it also scrambled the crowd’s sense of where the show actually was.
Fans who had spent much of the night packed against the barricade at the original stage suddenly found themselves far from the action, while those near the front-of-house setup were thrust into an unexpected front-row view.“Glad they were able to improvise but disappointing for those of us who waited it out getting crushed at the original stage barricade just to all of a sudden be in the very back,” one attendee wrote online afterward.
The incident marks the second time this week that an infrastructure issue disrupted a show on The Chainsmokers’ 2026 college campus tour.The duo’s performance at the University of Tennessee on Thursday night was abruptly canceled after a “massive crowd surge” caused barriers to collapse and sparked a “stampede,” according to local CBS affiliate WVLT News.
