Rams run out of oxygen at Mile High in stunning second-half collapse against Broncos
DENVER — Maybe it was the Mile High air.Maybe somebody forgot to refill the oxygen tanks at halftime.But whatever happened inside the Los Angeles Rams locker room, the team that walked out for the second half Sunday night looked nothing like the one that had spent the first 30 minutes suffocating the Denver Broncos.The Rams dominant 16-point lead disappeared.
A shutout suddenly turned into a shootout.And a night that looked destined to send the Rams home feeling like Super Bowl contenders instead ended with them staggering out of Empower Field at Mile High after a gut-punch loss 30-26.Let’s be honest, here.
This wasn’t just a defeat.This was a collapse.The Rams led 16-0 at halftime after holding Denver to 67 yards of total offense.Their defense had Bo Nix uncomfortable, their offense had controlled the game and the Broncos looked like a team searching for answers.But Nix must have found Michael’s Secret Stuff from “Space Jam” during halftime.Denver’s quarterback emerged throwing fireballs, leading consecutive touchdown drives of 42 and 52 yards.
The Broncos converted two-point conversions after both scores and erased a 16-point deficit faster than a Denver weather forecast can change from sunny to rain to back to sunny again.Suddenly, 16-0 was 16-16.The Rams’ high-octane offense, meanwhile, had stalled on the shoulder of I-25.Denver’s defense forced consecutive three-and-outs to begin the second half, and Los Angeles looked tired, flat and completely incapable of stopping the avalanche once it started rolling downhill.This was the definition of a tale of two halves.At some point the Rams found somewhat of a second wind.
