Anthony Volpe in play for Yankees Game 1 start leaving Jazz Chisholm on bench again

When the Yankees faced a Red Sox lefty in Game 1 of the AL wild-card series last year, Aaron Boone sent Jazz Chisholm Jr.to the bench, much to his chagrin. History could repeat itself Tuesday night, with Boone having to decide whether to start the left-handed hitting Chisholm or the right-handed hitting Anthony Volpe at second base against southpaw Payton Tolle.

Asked if he would be “angry” not to be in the lineup to face Tolle — against whom he is 1-for-5 with a home run and two strikeouts — Chisholm indicated he would. “As a competitor, who wouldn’t be?” said Chisholm, who was upset last year when he was not in the Game 1 lineup against lefty Garrett Crochet.“It’s the playoffs, you want to play.” Chisholm started both games against Tolle during the regular season, though the Yankees roster composition will be different this time around, including having Volpe (0-for-2 against Tolle) as a utility player.

Chisholm also only got 12 plate appearances under his belt after returning from the IL last week for a right thumb sprain. Boone brought up Chisholm’s recent injury when acknowledging he was considering platooning him and Volpe at second base. “Volpe is very much in play,” Boone said.“The platoon stuff is in play there.
