Braxton Berrios undergoes season-ending surgery in surprise Giants blow

For the third time in as many seasons, receiver Braxton Berrios won’t play in more than six games.Berrios announced Tuesday on Instagram that he is headed for season-ending surgery after he left Sunday’s Giants win with a foot/ankle injury.Just a devastating way to commemorate his 31st birthday.“Two of my last three seasons ended this way,” Berrios wrote, “and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t miserable right now.
I felt I belonged here this year and everything finally fell in place, now it feels like everything I’ve poured into the last 9 months is gone in the blink of an eye.“The timing that I thought had arrived feels like a punishment again, but the good news about God is I know it’s coming.”The Giants cut Darius Slayton before the first game and cut Odell Beckham Jr.last week.
Berrios, as the primary returner and a depth receiver, held more value and needed to be signed to the 53-man roster because he maxed out his three practice-squad elevations.Berrios finishes the season with four punt returns, five kickoff returns and zero catches on one target. He will be a free agent. Charlie Jones will fill Berrios’ multiple roles.
Receivers Dalen Cambre, Jalin Hyatt and Dontae Fleming (added Tuesday) are on the practice squad.“I think our first look would be internally, yes,” head coach John Harbaugh said Monday when Berrios seemed to miss some time.“We have guys that have been here practicing, who are in the system, know what they’re doing or are preparing for this opportunity.
I’m sure we’ll turn over every stone, too.But sometimes the best stones are right under your feet.”...
