Abdul El-Sayeds big, unearned ego might cost him Michigan

Pride cometh before the fall, but in defense of the vainglorious, there’s typically something to be proud of.Not so in the case of Abdul El-Sayed, the Michigan Democrat running — in the telling of a new dispatch from CNN — one of the most arrogant campaigns in recent memory.El-Sayed is calling his shot and prognosticating a seven-point victory over Republican Mike Rogers in the state’s US Senate race.The picture being painted by insiders, however, is of a hypercompetitive contest with a number of outstanding questions that will ultimately decide it.Chief among them: Has El-Sayed done enough to allay the concerns of the Democratic-leaning groups most skeptical of him?Many of his peers have their doubts — and for good reason.“Black and Jewish leaders are warning that they and many in their communities need more outreach,” reported CNN.Boy, do they have the stories to prove it.In all-important Detroit, where El-Sayed must run up the score to beat Rogers, he gave one black community leader the impression that he thinks “they don’t necessarily need to work as hard to get the black vote,” then snubbed him on a roundtable event they had promised to include him in.The spurned activist subsequently met with Rogers’ campaign, then “felt bad” and texted El-Sayed.He never got a response.“F–k him,” the activist ended up concluding.Prominent members of the Jewish community (surprise, surprise) have had a similarly dismal experience.Andy Schor is the Democratic mayor of Lansing, the state capital and its sixth-largest city.Election Day is less than a month away, and El-Sayed hasn’t so much as touched base with him.“If he doesn’t need me, he doesn’t need me.And that’s their strategic decision,” mused Schor, who said he won’t vote for Rogers, but also can’t back El-Sayed before they have a conversation about the candidate’s attitude toward Jews and unhealthy obsession with the only nation in which they constitute a majority.
