Eagles releasing Andy Dalton as injuries cause roster mayhem

There is no end to the Eagles’ chaotic week.The team is releasing veteran quarterback Andy Dalton, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported Friday.Tanner McKee and Cole Payton will back up Jalen Hurts going forward.Dalton initially won the Eagles’ backup job, but McKee was promoted over Dalton as the Eagles’ No.
2 under center last week.Dalton made one appearance for Philadelphia, throwing a costly interception in the end zone in a 27-7 Week 3 loss to the Bears when Hurts left the game to be evaluated for a concussion.The following week, McKee was named the backup in Week 4 against the Rams.Dalton, 38, could find his way back to the Eagles’ 53-man roster or their practice squad, per Garafolo.
The Eagles needed Dalton’s roster spot with the team dealing with several injuries.The Eagles’ roster has seen a lot of turnover this week.Right tackle Lane Johnson announced his retirement Tuesday and the team traded two-time Pro Bowl center Cam Jurgens and a future pick to the Ravens for a 2027 fifth-rounder and a 2028 second-rounder.In three preseason games for the Eagles, Dalton went 18-for-35 for 168 yards and one touchdown without an interception.Dalton, 38, was traded to the Eagles from the Panthers in March.The Eagles will face the AFC South-leading Jaguars in London on Sunday without several key weapons on offense.
