Red Bulls close to signing USMNT winger Cade Cowell in first big offseason move

The Red Bulls are on the verge of adding American winger Cade Cowell from Mexico side Chivas de Guadalajara, according to multiple reports. The deal would bring Cowell, 22, back to the United States on a one-year loan to the Red Bulls with the option to buy at the end of the loan, soccer journalist César Luis Merlo reported Wednesday. Cowell’s repatriation comes after a disappointing 2025 in Guadalajara, where minutes became scarce and highs became hard to come by. He was named the Liga MX Player of the Month (July 2024) in his first year with Chivas, however, he was limited to just four starts this season for the Mexican club. Cowell had 11 goals and four assists in 68 appearances with Chivas after joining the club in 2024. Chivas agreed to a transfer deal worth $4 million with the San Jose Earthquakes in order to bring in Cowell. The likely move to the Big Apple comes as Cowell looks to return to his previous form that garnered the attention of the Liga MX club in the first place. In 114 appearances with the Earthquake, the academy product had 12 goals and 12 assists. Cowell has also been a part of the U.S.Men’s National Team program, earning 11 caps with the most recent one coming in November 2024. The move would be the first major roster addition made by the Red Bulls this offseason and the first by head of sport Julian de Guzman, who took over the role in late October. During his first press conference in the role, de Guzman pointed to the club bringing in some help to complement the likes of Emil Forsberg, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Lewis Morgan. The Red Bulls front office still has one major decision to make and that is on a new head coach.
