AJ Preller defends Padres prospect purge at trade deadline: We dont apologize

The San Diego Padres improved their starting rotation before Monday’s trade deadline by acquiring Robbie Ray from the San Francisco Giants and then trading for Casey Mize from the Detroit Tigers.However, they did so at a big cost to their future.

Losing three out of their top nine prospects isn’t ideal, especially since both Ray and Mise are essentially rentals, as both will become free agents this offseason.This is a bold tactic from Padres President of Baseball Operations and General Manager, AJ Preller, who sent a defiant message about his aggressive strategy when speaking to the media on Monday.“We’re trying to win.

We’re trying to get to the postseason and do it year after year,” Preller said when asked about the Padres trading three top prospects for two rental starters, according to an X post from MLB.com’s AJ Cassavell.Preller has earned a reputation for being extremely aggressive about adding talent to San Diego’s big league roster.

This is far from the first time doing so has come at the cost of the Padres’ farm system.This could easily be forgivable if San Diego’s big league team was winning World Series titles.

But the team has only won four playoff series since Preller became GM in 2014, and have only advanced to the NLCS one time (when they lost in five games to the Philadelphia Phillies in 2022).Perhaps this will be the year where Preller’s strategy produced a World Series ring.Perhaps not.

And if it doesn’t, San Diego will have lost another crop of top prospects for nothing....
