An obese Georgia death row inmate finally has his execution date set, nearly 23 years after he viciously murdered two women.Stacey Humphreys, 53, is scheduled to be put to death on Sept.16 at approximately 7 p.m.
at the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison in Jackson, after the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles had initially suspended his December 2025 execution.Legal conflicts of interest within the parole board had forced the postponement.But Humphreys’ defense team made a last-ditch effort to secure a new trial at an appeal hearing Thursday.Defense attorney Jill Benton accused a juror from Humphreys’ 2007 trial of extreme misconduct, arguing that she hid bias and harassed other jurors, according to FOX5 Atlanta.
Prosecutor Sabrina Graham dismissed Benton’s claims as character assassination nearly two decades after the trial.“The fact that they didn’t get this evidence and bring this claim when they could have, that’s on them,” Graham said.“It’s not on the court to come back and clean up something that could have happened over 15 years ago.”The judge in Thursday’s appeal promised a swift decision.
