Red Sox believe Sonny Gray could retire after this season and Yankees could be final game

The 2026 season could end up being Sonny Gray’s last.The veteran right-hander, who turns 37 in November, has not committed to pitching in 2027 and recently told The Boston Globe he would retire “in a heartbeat” if his family wanted him to do so.Boston reportedly is taking the possibility seriously, according to the outlet, with some in the organization believing retirement is on the table despite Gray’s strong season.Asked recently about the possibility of retirement, Gray declined to say much.“We can get into that at another time but not right now,” he said, per the Globe.If 2026 is, indeed, his final big league season, Gray’s final start could come in the increasingly likely matchup against the rival Yankees during the wild-card round of the postseason. Gray spent a season and a half in pinstripes after coming over before the 2017 trade deadline, and it didn’t go exactly as planned for either him or the team. The three-time All-Star posted a 4.51 ERA across 41 games (34 starts) with the Yankees before being traded to Cincinnati before the 2019 season, during which he posted a Cy Young-caliber season with the Reds. Gray ripped the Yankees during his introductory press conference with the Red Sox over the winter.“It feels good to me to go to a place where it’s easy to hate the Yankees,” Gray said.“I never wanted to go there in the first place.”Gray is enjoying one of the best seasons of his 14-year MLB career in Beantown, posting a 2.82 ERA in 163 innings.“I’ve very, very much so enjoyed Boston.
