Reading and raving are rarely thought of together, but one Japanese club is flipping the script by combining them.SPREAD, an underground club located in Tokyo’s Shimokitazawa neighborhood, hosted ‘JUCY BOOK RAVE,’ a daytime event that temporarily transformed its dancefloor into a dimly lit reading lounge on September 26th.
Running from 10am to 2pm, the event covered the club floor in carpeting so attendees could sit, recline against the walls or stretch out with a book while ambient music played around them.After 1pm, organizers gradually raised the volume, giving guests the choice to continue reading or hit the dancefloor in the more traditional sense.
Visitors could bring their own books or purchase fiction selected by the organizers, including works intended to inspire different interpretations among readers.A book-exchange component added another communal layer to the gathering.
While combining reading with music may seem counterintuitive or distracting, the choice of ambient electronica offers enough sound to create a shared atmosphere without lyrics or big drops that would constantly fight the author for attention.Check out a clip below.
Although unusual, ‘JUCY Book Rave’ is not the first-ever event of its kind.Brooklyn-born ‘Reading Rhythms’ has hosted hundreds of reading parties since launching in 2023, pairing silent reading periods with music and social interaction across more than 20 cities.
