A dramatic video captured NYPD officers diving into the freezing waters of a busy section of the East River to rescue a man struggling to reach the Brooklyn shoreline, according to authorities.A 911 call was received around 1:03 p.m.on Nov.
30 about a person in the water near Furman Street and Montague Street, across the river from Manhattan’s Pier 11, where dozens of ferries dock and depart each day, according to the NYPD.Upon arriving, cops discovered a 67-year-old man struggling to swim to shore, police said.Two officers with the NYPD’s Harbor Unit tossed a rescue float over the railing and eventually dove into the ice-cold river to rescue the man, the clip posted by the NYPD on X shows.The daring officers frantically swam over to the man and pulled him up to nearby rocks so he could be safely lifted out on a ladder, footage showed.“Relax, you’re OK,” the officer reassured him.
NYPD’s Emergency Service Unit, aviation, and scuba units also responded and helped rescue and transport the man to Brooklyn Methodist Hospital in stable condition, police said.It is not immediately clear how the man ended up in the East River.“When a 911 call came in about a person struggling in the water, the NYPD’s Harbor Unit dived right in.They didn’t hesitate, jumping into the freezing water and rescuing the individual, who is now in stable condition,” the NYPD posted on X.“No fear.
